Learning Outcomes

After completing this section, students should be able to do the following.

  • Use various units of length, area and volume as part of data collection and interpretation.
  • Use histograms to characterize the shape of data.
  • Be able to define upper and lower specification limits, and use them to identify defective parts.
  • Be able to estimate the number of defective parts, resulting from a manufacturing process with a given mean, standard deviation, and specs.
  • Be able to discuss various quality standards, such as 0-defects, and six-sigma.
  • Be able to discuss the meaning of accuracy and precision.

Prerequisites

It is assumed that students are familiar with the following concepts.

  • Histograms
  • Normal distribution
  • Population mean and standard deviation
  • The Empirical Rule
